On a cold winter’s night, several animals seek shelter at William’s home as he tries to sleep. The last animal to arrive is larger than any of the other critters and they hesitate to accept him. This rhyming picture book grabs and maintains readers and listeners attentions as they wait to see which animal will arrive next. The illustrator accurately displays moods of the characters. A satisfying and heartwarming story.

In this board book, children peek through the see-through opening and see the animal that will be read about next. The story begins with an owl asking a squirrel about food he will eat when the weather gets cold. Next, squirrel asks birds about their winter preparation. Readers briefly learn about three woodland animals’ winter routines. A good introduction to how animals survive in the winter for preschool children and for children learning to read. There are only eight pages to read. Including the front and back covers give this book a total of ten pages. The information isn’t overwhelming. Colors are bright. Great book to couple with an activity.

In this picture book, Quincy never learns to blend however he does learn to contribute his talent to his society. The artwork is attractive and sometimes offers comic relief. Readers and listeners are never too old to benefit from this story.
